HYROX introduced a modified version of its competition sled this weekend, with a change designed to improve consistency during the sled push and sled pull.
The biggest change is underneath. The metal runners that make contact with the carpet are now replaceable, allowing worn runners to be replaced as needed.
On the previous sleds, replacing the runners required taking the sled apart. As the runners wore down, the amount of friction between the sled and carpet could change.
The new design allows the runners to be replaced without dismantling the sled, giving HYROX another way to maintain more consistent equipment across races.
Importantly, the modification does not change the weight of the sleds.
Women Open remains 102 kg (225 lbs) including the sled for the push and 78 kg (172 lbs) for the pull. Men Open and Women Pro remain 152 kg (335 lbs) for the push and 103 kg (227 lbs) for the pull. Men Pro remains 202 kg (445 lbs) for the push and 153 kg (337 lbs) for the pull.
The total distance also remains unchanged at 50 meters for both the sled push and sled pull. The number and length of individual trips can vary depending on the race setup.
Will the Modified Sleds Fix Lane Differences?
The change may help with consistency as the runners wear down, but it won’t eliminate differences between sled lanes.
The carpet remains another variable. Differences in the condition of the surface can change the friction between the sled and carpet, meaning identical sleds carrying identical weights can still feel different from lane to lane.
