HYROX has released a series of rulebook updates, clarifications, and competition standards ahead of the 2026/27 season. Among the most significant additions is a new qualification provision that gives officials the authority to declare an event or event day “Out of Ranking” for World Championship qualification, Elite qualification, and world record purposes due to environmental, operational, or safety conditions.
HYROX Can Now Declare Events “Out of Ranking”
One of the most significant additions to the rulebook gives HYROX officials the authority to declare an event or event day “Out of Ranking.”
Under the new provision, HYROX may remove a race from World Championship qualification, Elite qualification, and world record eligibility due to environmental, operational, or safety conditions.
Incomplete Workout Stations Now Result in Disqualification
HYROX has introduced a blanket “Incomplete Station = DQ” standard.
Under the updated language, athletes must complete every workout station in full. Failure to complete any station in its entirety will result in disqualification. The rule applies across all eight workout stations and is separate from penalties related to missed run laps.
The update provides a clear standard following several high-profile discussions surrounding incomplete stations during the 2025/26 season.
Doubles Togetherness Standard Tightened
HYROX has tightened the existing doubles togetherness standard by reducing the maximum permitted gap between partners to 10 seconds as measured by HYROX timing equipment in and out of ROX Zones, In and Out, etc. Partners may still not begin a workout station until they are reunited.
Sandbag Drops No Longer Result in Automatic DQ
Dropping the sandbag twice will no longer result in automatic disqualification. Instead, each infringement will carry a 15-second penalty. Athletes will receive no warnings, and the sandbag must remain fully supported throughout the movement.
Chalk Usage Clarified
HYROX has also clarified its chalk policy.
Only event-supplied chalk and accessories may be used during competition, and athletes may not carry chalk between workout stations. Each infringement will result in a two-minute penalty. Athletes may chalk their hands before the race begins using either powdered or liquid chalk.
New Start Tunnel Penalty
Athletes lingering in the start tunnel after their wave has begun may receive a one-minute penalty.
World Championship Doubles Teams Locked In
HYROX has also reinforced its position regarding World Championship doubles qualification.
Registrations are strictly non-transferable and non-refundable. Qualified doubles partners must compete together, and registered partners cannot be changed or substituted under any circumstances.
The clarification effectively ends the possibility of replacing an injured or unavailable partner after qualification has been secured.
Additional Competition Clarifications
Burpee Broad Jumps now explicitly allow up to a 5 cm stagger between feet.
During the Sled Push, athletes must face the direction of travel.
Athletes must remain seated on the rower until their distance is confirmed by a judge, while rowing procedures have also been simplified so athletes only need to be seated before grabbing the handle.
The final Sandbag Lunge is considered complete when the leading foot first contacts the ground beyond the finish line.
SkiErg jumping is now explicitly permitted provided athletes return their feet to the base plate.
Relay teams must begin with all four athletes present.

Education Over Enforcement
In addition to the competition updates, HYROX is placing greater emphasis on athlete education heading into the new season.
Areas identified for increased communication include running underneath the wall ball rig, carrying hydration cups into workout stations, proper handling of clothing during competition, chalk usage expectations, start-line procedures, late athlete arrivals, and doubles togetherness standards.
In several of these areas, HYROX appears to be focusing on education and communication rather than introducing additional penalties.
Taken together, the updates represent one of the more substantial rulebook revisions and clarifications in recent seasons as HYROX continues to refine competition standards, qualification procedures, and athlete expectations across the sport.
