While it is a quiet season in the Hybrid Fitness space the next big event many will be paying attention to is the CrossFit Games taking place in Madison, WI starting on August 3rd.
Some of the top male HYROX athletes have significant CrossFit experience. Hunter McIntyre received a wildcard invite to the CrossFit Games in 2019 and finished in 61st place. He was just shy of making the cut line which would have allowed him to compete in a 6,000-meter Ruck Run. Second Place in that Ruck event ended up going to Joshua Wichtrup, a former HYROX World Record holder himself. Wichtrup would wind up taking 18th place overall that year.
5th Place Finisher at the CrossFit Games in 2019, James Newbury, will be taking on the next HYROX race on the schedule in Sydney on August 12th. Here is a list of 5 more CrossFitters we want to see take on a HYROX race in the upcoming season:
Jelle Hoste
2023 was a breakout year for Jelle as he qualified for his first CrossFit Games. Most notably across all Semifinals, he had the fastest time in the aforementioned Run/Ski/Bike/Sled Pull workout. He coupled that with the fastest overall time in a workout which was 8 Snatches followed by an 800-meter dash. If he could extend that power out towards the hour mark he would be a formidable HYROX competitor.
Travis Mayer
Although stats on Games Athletes profiles are rarely reliable, Mayer has an 18:03 5k PR time listed. At “The Capitol” event in 2022 Mayer dominated the 3.5-mile run portion before picking up two 100 ln Jerry Cans and taking them for a 200-meter stroll. He is coming off an injury that cut his 2023 season short and we would love to see him train for a HYROX race.
Roman Khrennikov
Roman is an animal on the machines and can recover at a pace faster than most can go all out. At the 2020 Games qualifiers, he posted a 2:48.9 on the 1,000-meter Row. There were two workouts at the 2022 Games that were over 30 minutes long and in those, he took a 2nd and 6th proving his ability to go long as well.
Jayson Hopper
Another powerhouse with machine work, Jason has also proven his ability to run. At his first Games in 2021, Hopper took 6th on Event 10 which featured 3 miles of running. At the most recent Rogue Invitational, he dominated an elite field in a 30-minute plus Ruck through the Texas hills.
Lazar Đukić
If there is an endurance event at the CrossFit Games you can expect to see Lazar’s name near the top of the leaderboard. At last year’s Games, he led the field throughout most of “Bike to Work” a 30-minute plus test largely determined by 10 miles of biking before a penalty cost him the victory. He was also the leader in the top heat of “The Capitol” after completing the 3.5-mile run. At the 2021 Games, he was even more impressive in endurance events finishing second in a Swim/Kayak event that lasted over an hour and taking the victory in a workout that featured 3 miles of running and 90 Toes to Bar in an impressive time of 21:10.
